Literacy Project

You can help prepare young Tarahumara adults to read
the Word of God!
Excitement over literacy is growing like a fire that can’t be put out. As Ameritribes missionaries introduce one group of students to the wonders of reading, enthusiasm among many others bursts into flame, fanned by reports of what is happening at the La Mesa Learning Center.
Generous gifts to Ameritribes’ 2007 Christmas project transformed the shell of the Learning Center into the vibrant hub of activity it is today.
The facility is now furnished with tables, chairs, cabinets, whiteboards, computers, and a printer. In two remote locations, community members are building mud-brick satellite Learning Centers with the agreement that Ameritribes staff will begin to teach there also.
The response is bigger than we dreamed and the need for reading materials is great! The implications for the gospel are far-reaching, as Tarahumara adults are equipped to read the Word of God soon to become available in their dialect.
While Tarahumara enthusiasm is high, primers (learning-to-read booklets) and other reading materials are in short supply. In order to meet the growing demand, our staff has written primers in the local dialect that cover basic through advanced learning levels. Now these teaching materials and others must be produced in quantity and made available to eager students.
The La Mesa literacy team envisions putting a simple canvas tote bag containing 12 primers along with basic school supplies into the hands of each literacy student.
Imagine the students’ pride as they receive their own personal bag––a bag filled with items they need for literacy classes and one they can carry easily over mountain trails.
There is also an urgent need to produce Bible stories and lessons in the Tarahumara language so that new readers can soon be taught spiritual truths.
This Christmas, put primers and school supplies into the hands of eager young Tarahumara adults. Or invest in the production of teaching materials that are vital to planting the future Tarahumara church.
Either way, you’ll give a priceless gift––access to the world of learning and an introduction to the One we know as The Word!
